my new buzzword: stalk marketing

In: Marketing

19 Apr 2006

I read this post on Mark Cuban’s blog the other day where he’s talking about how a start-up company that wanted to talk to him got his attention by purchasing the keywords "Mark Cuban" on Google Adwords.  Mark goes on to explain that pretty much everyone in the public eye (and even many of us who are less known) like to Google themselves from time to time to see what sorts of things are on the web that mention their name.

So low and behold, one day when Mark Googles himself sees a sponsored ad addressed to him, just sitting there waiting for him to look himself up.  Eureka!

   stalk marketing (v)

  1. to target a person or group of people with a marketing message by planting the message in advance based on their normal behavioral patterns using tracking techniques including lurking, following, ambushing, and anticipation
  2. a relatively effective way to cut through the clutter of impersonal marketing messages received by an individual, especially if that individual is in the public eye, by placing a highly personalized message where they least expect to encounter one.

About this blog

Formerly titled "one man's pop culture commentary", I've decided to re-label this for a few reasons:
(1) It's now home for all my online 'stuff'
(2) the search engines like it better
(3) the posts will be less pop-culture focused

Thanks for dropping by.
